  • Diving With a Purpose, 15 Year Odyssey: Restoring Our Oceans, Preserving Our Heritage

  • Multiple groups such as Diving With a Purpose, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Biscayne National Park, and more have spent 15 years working together to showcase cultural and natural resources throughout the country. They focus in the protection, documentation, and interpretation of African slave trade shipwrecks and the maritime history and culture of African-Americans. This new exhibit at the History of Diving Museum, mile marker 82.9, highlights several shipwrecks and aircraft and the archaeological processes used to study them.

  • Join Steve Davis, Ph.D., as he tells of the place known as the River of Grass – the Everglades. Established as a national park in 1947, it is home to more than 70 threatened or endangered species. One out of every three Floridians relies on the Everglades for their water supply. The Everglades are in trouble and restoration of this damaged subtropical ecosystem is well-known and well-documented. Hear from Dr. Davis about restoration efforts. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., lecture begins at 6 p.m. The lecture is at the Keys History & Discovery Center and Islander Resort Conference Center, MM 82.

  • War heroes compete with world class anglers for prizes and trophies in this annual event targeting snook, redfish, bonefish, tarpon and permit. In honor of Veteran's Day, the event will host two war heroes to join the competition. The acclaimed event was inspired by 41st President George Bush, an avid Keys angler and a regular visitor to Cheeca. Proceeds benefit the locally based nonprofit Guides Trust Foundation (GTF) for Florida Keys guides in need.

  • Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary seeks volunteers for a Goal: Clean Seas Florida Keys marine debris cleanup, at Harry Harris Park, 50 East Beach Rd., in Tavernier, Florida, starting at 9 a.m. Participants will catalog debris collected to assist NOAA in studying and addressing marine debris issues. Volunteers must be at least 15 years old. All minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

  • The National Park Service is to honor all military veterans with special events and free entrance to all national parks for everyone for Veterans Day, including Everglades National Park and Dry Tortugas National Park. At Dry Tortugas National Park, a variety of remarkable experiences await visitors who venture out to this remote national park, including camping, snorkeling, bird watching, or fishing. Visitors also enjoy exploring Fort Jefferson, the largest all-masonry fort in the United States. It was built between 1846 and 1875 to protect the nation's gateway to the Gulf of Mexico.

On Saturday, there’s a 65-mile ride to Key West, with stops every 15 to 20 miles. Celebratory parties include festivities at Duval Street venues. On Sunday, participants can take a Sunset Fury Cruise. TSR Adventures Inc. hosts the event.

In this hilarious send-up of small-town morals and mores, they are all among the upstanding citizens of Tuna, Texas’ third-smallest town. Greater Tuna, the prequel to the Theater’s 2014-15 season’s "A Tuna Christmas,”features two actors creating the entire population of Tuna, Texas. A tour-de-farce of quick change artistry, our two actors travel across the stage like two whirling dervishes donning costume after costume, persona after persona. Two actors, twenty characters, and a barrel of laughs, y’all. Showtimes 8 p.m.; Sunday matinee 3 p.m.

Children will learn how migrating birds rely on the rich resources of the island chain during their seasonal journeys. Free admission, free parking. Discovery Saturday is held the third Saturday of every month. Pre-registration is recommended. The Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center is located at 35 East Quay Road on the Truman Annex waterfront in Key West.

  • This year contestants will be competing for over $3000 in cash prizes and gift certificates.  Cook-off participants – cooking teams, volunteers, judges and those who simply come to eat – are an enthusiastic and loyal audience. The public is invited to take part in the competition, or simply come to enjoy all the nibbles that are offered. The culinary competition sponsored by the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce is held at the Holiday Inn, mile marker (MM) 100 in Key Largo, and open to professional and amateur cooks and chefs, as well as young aspiring chefs. Categories include soups and chowders, appetizers, main dishes, sides and salads, and desserts. The event is to be held from 6 - 8:30 p.m., and public sampling starts at about 7 p.m. Awards are to be announced afterward. A limited number of sampling tickets are to be sold at the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce, so get tickets early!
