  • Anglers of all ages and abilities can target more than 40 species of fish in the Key West Fishing Tournament, a free-entry multidivision challenge that takes place Jan. 1 to Aug. 31, 2019. The tournament features divisions for men, women, junior anglers ages 10 to 15 and Pee Wees under 10 years old — making it ideal for extended families and multigenerational groups who want to share the angling experience.

  • Some of the best college swimmers - and perhaps future Olympians - in the country compete at Jacobs Aquatic Center, mile marker (MM) 99.6 oceanside, in a competition that is part of the celebration surrounding the annual Orange Bowl college football game in Miami. Spectators are invited to attend this free event, meet the swimmers and coaches. Racing is set to begin at 10 a.m.

  • Four new exhibitions open in January: O’Miami Poetry Retrospective, West African Portraiture, Portraits by Annie Dillard and Painted Photographs by Larry Blackburn. The public is invited to the opening reception Jan. 3, at The Studios of Key West, 533 Eaton Street for the First Thursday event from 6-8 p.m. Exhibitions by O, Miami, Rhonda Bristol, Annie Dillard, and Larry Blackburn fill all three floors of The Studios’ landmark building in Old Town. The shows remains on view through January 31. Gallery hours are 10am-4pm, Tuesday through Saturday.

  • Drinking Habits takes place during the early 1960s in the impoverished Oregon convent of the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing. Two nuns at the ‘Sisters of Perpetual Sewing’ have been secretly making wine in order to keep their poverty stricken convent afloat - behind the back of their alcohol-detesting Mother Superior. Unbeknownst to them, a local wine (theirs) has won a $500,000 award, and Paul and Sally, two newspaper reporters, who are ex-fiancés, are trying to discover the winning winery and break the story. The reporters go undercover as a nun and a priest, but their presence, combined with the arrival of a new nun, spurs paranoia throughout the convent that spies have been sent from Rome to shut them down. Wine and secrets are inevitably spilled as everyone tries to preserve the convent and reconnect with lost loves. Show times 8 p.m.

  • Servicemen and women — many wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan -- are to cycle across the Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys. The event is staged to provide inspiration and raise funds for their injured comrades recovering in American military hospitals. The ride across the Seven Mile Bridge is part of two days of cycling events in the Keys for the soldiers. The Keys cycling events are organized by the Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit, apolitical group whose mission is to raise public awareness and support for the needs of severely injured members of the military. The organization’s cross-country and local bicycle trips provide rehabilitative opportunities for injured soldiers. Come watch and support these amazing veterans. Group is expected to leave Marathon Fire Station around noon, cycle through Marathon, then cross the Seven Mile Bridge.

  • Friends of the Key West Library will present New York Times Best-Selling Novelist Madeline Miller as the first speaker in its popular Monday evening lecture series. The talk will be at the Old City Hall, 510 Greene Street. Miller’s appearance is made possible by the generous support of the Key West Literary Seminar. Ms. Miller’ second novel, Circe, was a Number One New York Times bestseller and was at the top of many Best of 2018 lists. Access to the Meeting Room at Old City Hall at 510 Green Street is at the front of the building by foot up a flight of stairs or by elevator located at the rear of the building.   • Hosted by veteran saltwater fishing journalist and broadcaster George Poveromo, the Salt Water Sportsman National Seminar Series is to kick off at 9 a.m. inside the Performing Arts Center of Coral Shores High School, mile marker 89.9 oceanside in Islamorada. Entering its 32nd year, the National Seminar Series is the nation’s longest-running educational course on recreational marine fishing tactics and techniques. Admission is $55 per person and covers five hours of instruction, a course textbook, a year subscription or extension to Salt Water Sportsman magazine, and various boating and fishing product samples. The grand prize at the conclusion of the Islamorada seminar is a Florida Keys fishing trip. Register online.

  • An American operatic classic and fine orchestral musicianship are to combine for Florida Keys audiences in the South Florida Symphony’s staging of George and Ira Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess.” An anticipated highlight of the symphony’s 2019 season, the production is to feature a cast of leading African-American vocalists including Neil Nelson as Porgy and Brandie Sutton as Bess. The masterful offering is to open at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Key West’s Tennessee Williams Theatre, 5901 College Road on the campus of Florida Keys Community College.

The story picks up 15 years after Nora famously slams the door on her stifling marriage at the conclusion of A Doll's House. In Mr. Hnath's updated version, Nora is now a successful business woman, who finds her husband, daughter and wise-cracking maid to be as changed as she has become.   • The trademark sound of Russell Hitchcock's soaring tenor voice and Graham Russell's simple yet majestic songs have created a unique sound that helped Air Supply become a staple of early-'80s radio, producing seven straight Top Five singles. The albums "Lost in Love", "The One That You Love", "Now & Forever", and "The Greatest Hits" sold in excess of 20 million copies during this era. In 2013, the duo was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association's Hall of Fame. Air Supply celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2015 and continue to delight audiences all over the world.   • During the stroll, small groups of visitors will be escorted to gravesites where interpreters will tell the stories of the deceased in brief monologues. The groups are scheduled for departures at 9:30, 9:50, and 10:10. Among the gravesites to be visited are those of Frank Booth. Charles DuPont, William Kerr, Thomas Romer, the Los Martires de Cuba, the Figueredo plot; the Benjamin Albury family restoration, and the USS Maine plot. The tour will take approximately 90 minutes. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and plan to walk over a mile on uneven ground. Bottled water will be provided. A cash donation of $20 pp to the Historic Florida Keys Foundation is recommended with all proceeds devoted to cemetery restoration.  Participants should enter the cemetery by either the Windsor Street or Frances Street gate and go to the registration table on 2nd Ave. Reservations are necessary.

  • Key West is the largest historical district of wooden structures on the US Department of the Interior’s National Register of Historic Places. The charm of Old Town can be attributed to the eclectic mix of over 3,000 wooden buildings constructed throughout the 19-Century; some of which were built in the Bahamas and brought to Key West. In her presentation, art historian Snow Philip will discuss the wide variety of styles and influences that led to Key West’s unique architectural fusion. From 6-7 p.m. Admission: $10, OIRF members $5

  • Trio Gaspard, whose members are from Germany, Greece and the UK, is one of the most sought-after trios of its generation. Jonian Ilias Kadesha (violin), Vashti Hunter (cello) and Nicholas Rimmer (piano) have been invited to perform regularly at major international concert halls like Wigmore Hall and the Berlin Philharmonie. They have been winners of three major international competitions since their inception in 2010. All Impromptu Classical Concerts are at 4:00 PM at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 401 Duval St. in Old Town.
