'Tropical Impressions' Art Show Runs Through Jan. 28 at Marathon Community Theater

MARATHON, Florida Keys — A group art show titled "Tropical Impressions" is to run through Saturday, Jan. 28, in the gallery of the Marathon Community Theater. The show is a unique collection of watercolors, oils, acrylics, collage and mixed media reflecting the impressions of eight local artists and the tropical ambiance in the Keys.

During the monthlong show at MCT, mile marker 49.5, viewers and theatergoers can enjoy the exhibit before the curtain and during intermissions of MCT's production of "The Dixie Swim Club." The gallery also is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays, through Jan. 28. An artist from the exhibit welcomes viewers and assists with purchases.

More than 70 individual works of art are for sale, and 20 percent of sale proceeds are donated to Marathon Community Theater.

Since 2001, Keys artists have grouped together for the expansive exhibit held in conjunction with the theater's annual January play. Initially, the show was a creative opportunity for nearly 25 artists from the former Bougainvillea House Gallery of Marathon to display a diversified body of artwork.

Today, artists from around the Keys bring color to the walls of the Marathon Community Theater each January.

The 2012 participating artists include newcomers Jerry Bachman and Leigh Burleson who work with water-based acrylics, mixed media and oils. They are joined by watercolor artists and show veterans Judith Conner, M. Ann Lynch, Dale Malone, Sandy Mezinis, Betty Rondeau and Julie Joyce-Rehbock, the show's founder and coordinator.
