Southernmost Regatta to Bring World-Class Racers to Key West Jan. 15-19

KEY WEST, Florida Keys — Top national and international sailing teams are to vie for victory in subtropical waters off the continental United States’ southernmost island city Monday through Friday, Jan. 15-19, during the Southernmost Regatta.

Organized and conducted by Sailing Inc., the Key West event includes five days of racing and surrounding activities for sailors and sailing fans. Teams are drawn to the island to enjoy competing in the locale’s typically balmy January climate, with its challenging waters and reliable breezes.

“Key West is one of the best places to sail in North America,” said regatta chairman Martin Kullman of Sailing Inc. “You get the opportunity to race on blue water, experience the island culture and reconnect with friends.”

The regatta is open to One Design keelboats and Offshore Racing Congress racing and cruising keelboats in multiple classes. Teams are to compete on two Atlantic Ocean courses south of Key West and inside the continental United States’ only contiguous coral barrier reef.

Races are slated to begin at 11 a.m. daily throughout the regatta. According to Kullman, plans call for 10 total races for all classes.

Spectators can watch the high-energy action from waterfront venues and enjoy social gatherings that allow interaction with participating teams in a casual island setting.

Awards and shore activities are to follow each day’s racing, with events headquartered at the Galleon Resort & Marina, 617 Front St. in Key West.
