Springtime Family Fun Planned March 28-29 at Island Fest in Islamorada
ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys — For visitors to and residents of Islamorada, springtime means heading outdoors to enjoy balmy subtropical weather and the 29th annual Florida Keys Island Fest, scheduled Saturday and Sunday, March 28-29.
Admission is free to enjoy live music, food, fun and featured art from over 100 exceptional local and national artists whose work includes paintings, sculptures, jewelry and fine crafts.
In addition to admiring the creations on display, attendees can purchase works that vary in price range and style.
The two-day arts and crafts show is open 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the bayfront Founders Park at mile marker 87.
An Island Fest staple that adds to the old-fashioned fun is the All-American Road Vintage Cruisers Car Show featuring antique cars, trucks, motorcycles and rat rods. Awards are to be presented in categories such as Coolest Cruiser, Raddest Rod, KeyZ Rider, Longest Haul, Funkiest Foreign, Best in Show and Big Kahuna. Festival attendees can vote for their favorites in the popular People's Choice category.
Live entertainers from various musical genres are to keep the groove moving both days. A live music concert is set for 5-7 p.m. Saturday, completing a fun-filled day as attendees watch the sun set over Florida Bay.
Other planned highlights include Saturday’s wacky “What Floats Your Boat” race for homemade “boats” crafted of non-maritime materials. Sunday’s mouthwatering Taste of Islamorada culinary competition is to showcase local restaurants’ dishes.
Kids can have their own fun by painting a life-sized dolphin statue, building sand sculptures or competing in hula-hoop contests.
On-site parking is available for a $5 donation. Organizers suggest attendees bring lawn chairs and blankets to maximize enjoyment of a full day's fun. Events are to take place rain or shine.
