Violinist Chee-Yun Kim to Star with Symphony in Key West Feb. 18

KEY WEST, Florida — Classical music enthusiasts can enjoy a performance by internationally renowned violinist Chee-Yun Kim during the South Florida Symphony's Feb. 18 masterworks concert in Key West.

Titled "Love, Loss, Redemption," the event is the third masterworks concert in the symphony's 17th season.

The soloist and the symphony, composed of preeminent classical musicians from around the United States, are scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m. at the Tennessee Williams Theatre, 5901 College Road on the Florida Keys Community College campus.

Guided by award-winning conductor and Key West native Sebrina Maria Alfonso, the unique orchestra began as the Key West Symphony and later expanded to offer concerts around South Florida.

During the Feb. 18 concert, Kim is to display her artistry on Jean Sibelius' Violin Concerto. The evening's offerings also include Felix Mendelssohn's "Ruy Blas" Overture and Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 1.

The violinist, renowned for her flawless technique, appears regularly with leading orchestras including the London Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and has toured with the Haifa Symphony and Hong Kong Philharmonic among many others. She also has appeared as a recitalist and released a number of critically acclaimed recordings including the platinum-selling "Serenata Notturno." A noted music educator as well, she gives master classes around the world.

Before the February performance, attendees can enjoy a 6:45 p.m. "symphony chat" with classical pianist and music historian Edward Pitts at the Tennessee Williams Theatre. A post-concert reception is scheduled with Alfonso, Chee-Yun Kim and orchestra members.

Tickets for the performance range from $25 to $75 per person depending on seat location. They can be purchased online at keystix.com.

The symphony's 2014-15 Key West's masterworks season is to conclude March 26 with "Fate of a Hero" featuring pianist Svetlana Smolina.
