FORECAST FOR ROUGH SEAS, STRONG WINDS FORCES POSTPONEMENT OF UNDERWATER IRONING EVENT

KEY LARGO, Florida Keys — A National Weather Service forecast for strong winds and rough seas has forced organizers of the Key Largo’s Extreme Underwater Ironing event to change the date for their wacky activity.

The event was originally scheduled for Saturday, May 1, but is now set for a morning dive on Saturday, June 12.

“We know a number of divers planned to travel to Key Largo to participate and we apologize for the postponement,” said Rob Mitchell, one of the organizers. “But diver safety is paramount, as well as protecting our natural resources.

“We are concerned projected conditions pose a risk for both aspects,” he said.

Organizers hope to attract about 100 divers to perform the domestic ironing chore near the Christ of the Deep statue, about five miles offshore in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

The subsea pressing party is an effort to land in the “Guinness Book of World Records” for the activity and break the current record, held by a group of British scuba divers, with 86 participants. Taking the tedious task to new depths, participating divers must iron pieces of clothing simultaneously within a 10-minute time limit.
