Tropical Storm Warning and Watch Canceled for Dry Tortugas and Lower Keys Respectively

FLORIDA KEYS –  The National Hurricane Center canceled a tropical storm warning for the Dry Tortguas and a tropical storm watch for the Lower Florida Keys late Tuesday after Hurricane Idalia moved even further away from the island chain leaving only minor impacts.

Chip Kasper, the Florida Keys National Weather Service Office meteorologist in charge, reports that a coastal flood warning and a coastal flood advisory remain in effect for the Lower and Middle Keys, respectively.

There is the potential for some coastal flooding in low-lying areas through Wednesday morning.

Kasper warned motorists not to drive on flooded streets and to be vigilant while driving through any squally weather.

He also cautioned about occasional fast-moving squalls with gusty winds and poor visibility in heavy downpours. 

A small craft advisory continues for waters surrounding the entire Florida Keys. Boaters should remain in port until seas subside.

U.S. Coast Guard officials reported that the Port of Key West is temporarily closed to commercial traffic including cruise ships.

The National Park Service has temporarily closed Dry Tortugas National Park, including Fort Jefferson, to visitors.

The Florida Park Service has temporarily closed Bahia Honda State Park in the Lower Keys and Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park in Key West.

Key West International Airport officials report uninterrupted airport operations, but recommend that passengers check flight status with their airline before going to the airport.

Weather conditions have begun to gradually improve.
