Keys Escape Significant Impact From Tropical Cyclone Laura

Tropical cyclone Laura became a hurricane Tuesday, but only grazed portions of the island chain with low-end sustained tropical-storm-force winds leaving little impact.

There are no longer tropical cyclone watches or warnings for Laura in the Florida Keys, including the Dry Tortugas.

Both Keys utility companies, the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative and Keys Energy, reported 100 percent electrical service restoration, following numerous individual trouble calls.

Keys transportation systems are operational and both Keys airports are operating normally.

Officials at the City of Marathon reported minor impacts to recreation areas. Sombrero Beach Park reopened Wednesday, and Coco Plum Beach is expected to reopen by Thursday after minor cleanup.

Keys' state parks have reopened to overnight campers and RV guests, according to state parks officials. Everglades National Park has reopened as well.

Park concession-operated boat, ferry and seaplane tours and overnight camping at Dry Tortugas National Park resumed Wednesday, Aug. 26, according to park officials.
