New: Stay in a ‘tiny house village’ in the Florida Keys

16 March 2020: For UK holidaymakers considering a future trip to the Florida Keys, the subtropical island chain now offers a village of waterfront tiny houses as an offbeat new accommodation offering.

Visitors can enjoy ‘glamorous camping’ in a waterfront enclave at the 75-acre Sunshine Key RV Resort & Marina in the Lower Keys near Big Pine Key.

The newly opened Sunshine Key Tiny House Village, located just 30 miles from Key West, features five colourful houses with prices starting at $250 (around £191) per night plus tax.

“Our tiny house village makes the perfect Florida destination and is a great ‘glamping’ option for any Keys road trip,” said Pat Zamora, spokeswoman for Petite Retreats, operators of the tiny house village. “It’s the ultimate relaxation destination.”

Each Sunshine Key tiny house is custom built, sleeps two to six guests and is under 350 square feet in size. They sit near the RV resort’s Gulf of Mexico shoreline and have their own distinctive design.

Amenities include linens, a full bath and standing shower, air conditioning and heat, a stove top, coffeemaker, toaster, cookware and dinnerware, a refrigerator, TV with basic cable and outdoor dining.

The tiny house village, identifiable by its bright tropical colours, offers five models: the aqua Kai and jade Hemingway, each with accessible lofted sleeping quarters; the yellow Lucy and light green Isla with round porthole-style windows, each sleeping up to six people; and the pink Pearl with a lofted queen bed and living room sleeper-sofa.

The 399-site Sunshine Key RV Resort & Marina features a full-service marina, a recreation centre and stepladder access to an open-water swimming area from a sunset pier. It’s located at 38801 Overseas Highway near Bahia Honda State Park.
