Underwater Bunny to Stage Subsea Egg Hunt April 12 in the Florida Keys
ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys — Divers and snorkelers can support a Florida Keys charity while they “egg-splore” the clear, warm waters off Islamorada during the annual Underwater Easter Egg Hunt set for Sunday, April 12.
The Easter “egg-stravaganza” is hosted by Captain “Cottontail” Spencer Slate, who dons a giant bunny suit and dive gear and hides brightly colored eggs for eager bounty hunters. Real eggs and nontoxic dyes are used to avoid any negative environmental impacts.
Participants search for the underwater treasure in a secret location adjacent to shallow reefs in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
Prizes are awarded including a goody basket for each of two fortunate hunters who discovers a “golden egg” among the hard-boiled hoard.
Captain Slate has offered dive, snorkel and underwater wedding experiences in Florida Keys waters since 1978. He is active in efforts to promote ocean conservation among divers, encouraging them to be stewards of the undersea environment.
Monies raised during his annual undersea hunt benefit Kids In Special Situations, providing gifts and holiday cheer to children in need throughout the year.
Interested egg-seekers can preregister for the morning excursion with Captain Slate’s Scuba Adventures, located at mile marker 90.7 oceanside at the Casa Mar Village shopping enclave in Tavernier.
The one-location dive/snorkel trip is specially priced at $40 per adult snorkeler or certified diver and $25 per child snorkeler under age 13, including gear.
Divers and snorkelers are asked to check in at 8 a.m. and boats depart at 8:30 a.m.
