  • Multiple groups such as Diving With a Purpose, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Biscayne National Park, and more have spent 15 years working together to showcase cultural and natural resources throughout the country. They focus in the protection, documentation, and interpretation of African slave trade shipwrecks and the maritime history and culture of African-Americans. This new exhibit at the History of Diving Museum, mile marker 82.9, highlights several shipwrecks and aircraft and the archaeological processes used to study them.

  • Anglers of all ages and abilities can target more than 40 species of fish in the Key West Fishing Tournament, a free-entry multi-division challenge that takes place Dec. 1 to July. 31, 2020. The tournament features divisions for men, women, junior anglers ages 10 to 15 and Pee Wees under 10 years old — making it ideal for extended families and multigenerational groups who want to share the angling experience.

  • Winter distance runners in the Florida Keys can welcome warmer climes and the return of Islamorada's annual Half Marathon, 10k and the run-for-fun Beach N' Beer Mile. The subtropical road race is open to bucket list runners or newbies of all ages and skill levels. Registration is open for the half-marathon and 10k events Saturday, Dec. 7. At noon the fun-while-you-run Beach N' Beer Mile kicks off from the iconic Robbie's Marina, mile marker 77.5 bayside. The main half-marathon and 10k events Sunday also begin at Robbie's Marina.

  • Christmas lights on outriggers, Santa's elves and brightly lit deck displays highlight the beautiful festivities during the Key Colony Beach Boat Parade. Set to begin at dusk from the 7th Street canal, the parade is open to all boats, and the route visits canals and cuts, and passes city hall three times.   • Recreation for teens in the Florida Keys can mean learning from experienced local captains and mates to tie a bimini or rig ballyhoo. One weekend each year anglers aged 16 and younger can apply such lessons in this competition. A maximum of six anglers is allowed per boat. Proceeds aid Florida Keys charities. This tournament has been held since 1964, one of the oldest sailfish events in the Keys.

  • The Southernmost City celebrates with a descending 6-foot red high heel shoe carrying drag queen Sushi at the Bourbon Street Pub/New Orleans House complex, 724 Duval St. Seconds before midnight, the high heel bearing a lavishly gowned and coiffed Sushi is to be lowered from the second-story balcony of the complex toward the cheering crowds below. As midnight strikes and the New Year officially begins, she will land and gleefully pop the cork on a ceremonial bottle of champagne.

This donation-based event is open to the public with donations to benefit the Florida Keys SPCA animal rescue shelter.
