  • The Key West Art Center is happy to have Lothar Speer return as a figure drawing instructor on Zoom as a virtual art instructor. Lothar studied at The National Academy of The Fine Arts, Vienna, where he received The Johannes Fueger Medal, a European distinction in the field of figure drawing. This workshop is an introduction to this powerful tradition for artists of all levels. Lothar has been teaching the figure for over three decades and delights in adjusting his feedback to each student's level and needs. The principles learned here are universal and can be applied to any subject matter and develop skill which is the prerequisite for powerful personal artistic expression.   • The Waterfront Playhouse, located at 310 Wall St., adjacent to Key West’s renowned Mallory Square, continues its 2021 season with a twist. While many in-person shows have been postponed or canceled due to the pandemic, the theater is providing Key West a different entertainment option by broadcasting live radio treatments of “Treasure Island” (Feb. 13), “It Happened One Night” (Feb. 27), “The Hitchhiker” (March 13) and “Tales of Poe” (March 27) on the Keys’ US1 Radio 104.1 FM. Theater lovers around the United States can tune in to the broadcasts via US1.com.

  • The Cinema Sundays series are special presentations in conjunction with the Key West Film Festival and Visualize Entertainment. Upcoming movies are as follows: If Beale Street Could Talk (Feb 21) in celebration of Black History Month; and 9 to 5: The Story of a Movement (March 7) to celebrate International Women's Day. Each film will have an accompanying interview from the production team or cast in order to provide a connection to the film for audiences. Cinema Sunday showings will begin at 7 P.M.

  • Part of TSKW's Old Town, New Folk music series. Multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Darrell Scott mines and cultivates the everyday moment, taking the rote, menial, mundane, and allowing it to be surreal, ever poignant, and candidly honest, lilting, blooming, and resonating. Scott recently toured with Robert Plant and the Zac Brown Band (2 years with each), produced albums for Malcolm Holcomb and Guy Clark and was named “songwriter of the year” for both ASCAP and NSAI. Tickets for this virtual concert are $25, $22 for TSKW members. Starts 8 p.m., and streams live on Mandolin.

  • This virtual program, part of the regular program offerings by Keys History & Discovery Center, is being offered from 6-7 p.m., via Zoom, and curator Brad Bertelli brings a special guest, Ryan Harke. Bring your questions about prehistoric Indian cultures in the Florida Keys. Harke, a Florida archaeologist and PhD candidate, has worked for contract archaeology firms and for the Florida Public Archaeology Network for the past 13 years. His work is focused on the Native American cultures of the Florida Keys. The program is free to attend but capacity is limited. Advance registration is required.

  • Tennessee Williams Theatre, 5901 College Rd., presents a performance by Jeremy Denk, one of America’s foremost pianists. Winner of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, and the Avery Fisher Prize, Denk was recently elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Denk returns frequently to Carnegie Hall and in recent seasons has appeared with the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, and Cleveland Orchestra, as well as on tour with Academy of St Martin in the Fields, and at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms.   • The annual “Delicate Balance of Nature” lecture series will be presented in a new format this year, virtually on Zoom, and sponsored by the Friends of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park (Citizen Support Organization). Enjoy a presentation from 7-8:30 p.m., by Dr. Angelo “Jason” Spadaro, assistant professor of Marine Science and Technology at the College of the Florida Keys. Our iconic coral reef ecosystem in Florida, of both economic and ecological value, is now dependent on restoration efforts if it is to survive. Dr. Spadaro will discuss exciting research that led to the inclusion of a large native crab species in ongoing coral restoration projects in Florida and other Caribbean basin locations. To attend this online event, registration is required. There is no charge to attend the lectures, limited to 100 participants.

The transformation of Florida’s history, as told through the myriad methods of transportation, began within Florida as a backwoods frontier to one of the most important states in the union. From Bellamy Road of the 1820s through Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railway to the modern transportation issues facing Florida in the 21st century, Professor Noll explains how transportation was crucial to the development of the Sunshine State.   • Plein Air Key West is an all-inclusive and fun event that attracts local artists and talented amateurs throughout the Keys with many visiting artists planning their trips to Key West around this time to participate. Watercolor, acrylic, oil and pastel paintings, charcoal and pencil sketch artists are all welcome. Artists may have more than one canvas or paper stamped. Artists in all media are welcome and can register at the gallery to participate between 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. or pre- register online, with artists returning completed art work back to the gallery by 1:30 p.m.

  • Enjoy a free concert on the historic grounds of the Key West Lighthouse at 4 p.m. The program will be presented by the Axiom Brass Quintet. This group is internationally recognized for their repertoire that ranges from jazz and Latin music to string quartet transcriptions, as well as original compositions for brass quintet.  The outdoor venue for the concert will be setup with appropriate socially distanced seating and limited to 225 attendees. Facial masks will be required to be worn by all attendees for the full duration of the concert. Reservations required.

There are 165 species of plants available with an inventory totaling more than 2,000 plants that attract birds and butterflies in 1-gallon to 10-gallon pots.  Key West Tropical Forest members receive a discount.  All proceeds directly benefit the nonprofit Garden’s conservation program.

  • In partnership with the Samuel’s House, this national one-woman play project is connecting the performing arts with local women’s shelters to draw attention to domestic violence and to raise funds for both nonprofits. The Shot is performed by film and TV star Sharon Lawrence. Audiences may be most familiar with the EMMY nominated actor from NYPD Blue, Desperate Housewives, or Grey’s Anatomy. Performance is available on demand and online. The play is offered at no charge, but patrons are encouraged to purchase a “Pay What You Will” ticket or make a tax deductible donation. Ticket Sales and donations collected in conjunction with this project will be divided between the two nonprofits.

  • The annual “Delicate Balance of Nature” lecture series will be presented in a new format this year, virtually on Zoom, and sponsored by the Friends of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park (Citizen Support Organization). Enjoy a presentation from 7-8:30 p.m., by Janice Duquesnel, Florida Park Service Biologist based in the Florida Keys, who is to share her vast knowledge of the critical role of mangrove ecosystems to both marine and upland habitats. Also included in her presentation will be the animals that are supported by mangrove habitats and how to identify the three native species of mangroves, as well as two non-native mangroves that have been discovered in South Florida. To attend this online event, registration is required. There is no charge to attend the lectures, limited to 100 participants.
