Due to the coronavirus crisis, many near-term special events in the Florida Keys have been, or are likely to be, canceled or adapted to virtual environments. Highest risk continues to be large in-person gatherings where it is difficult for individuals to remain spaced at least 6 feet apart and attendees travel from outside the local area.

  • The Connections Project mural, titled “A Mosaic of the Keys” is made up of individual 6-by-6-inch canvases that were decorated by local artists and creative residents, with the completed pieces arranged into the colorful mosaic. Art lovers can see the mural during a Keyswide “road show” tour, currently at Big Pine Key’s Artists in Paradise Gallery.

  • Fans and friends of the Florida Keys’ Conch Republic can celebrate the irreverent "nation's" 39th birthday with activities including a tall ship pirate adventure, traditional shrimp boil, sunset boat parade, tour of the USCGC Ingham floating maritime museum, "wearable art" fashion show benefit, street fair on Key West's Duval Street, "rum battle," sailing excursions, "Art of Wine" gallery stroll, gourmet dinner and absinthe tasting, sunset cruises and a sailing race that salutes the Florida Keys' seafaring heritage. The annual Conch Republic Independence Celebration commemorates the Keys’ symbolic 1982 secession from the United States and reinvention as the eccentric republic. Organizers are to uphold coronavirus safety protocols throughout the festival, including mandatory masking and social distancing.

  • Everglades and Dry Tortugas National Parks will waive their entrance fee on this first day of National Park Week, part of a continued commitment to increase access, promote recreational opportunities, improve visitor facilities and conserve natural and historical treasures in national parks for the benefit and enjoyment of the American people.  Everglades National Park normally charges $30.00 per vehicle or vessel, $25.00 per motorcycle, and $15.00 per person for pedestrians, cyclists and paddle-craft, for a 7-day pass. Dry Tortugas National Park normally charges $15.00 per person over the age of 16, which is good for 7 days. Fees are ordinarily included in the ticket prices for ferry and seaplane tours, but they will not be included on fee free days.

  • Afro Roots World Music is one of the longest-running events of its kind. The festival started at Tobacco Road, and has been staged at various locations throughout South Florida. Afro Roots, now regional, spans from Jupiter to Key West. At 5:30 and 9 p.m. each day, live music is to be staged at The Green Parrot - 601 Whitehead St.; musical acts include Cortadito with special guest Tomas Diaz (April 21); Guerra Grooves (April 22) FABI World Music with special guest ITAWE (April 23).

Dr. Frank Ridgley DVM, is the head of Zoo Miami’s Conservation and Research Department and a research associate at Florida International University. His talk will focus on the techniques used by state and federal agencies to unlock the secrets of this endangered big cat so that it can be better protected. He will also address some of the continued risks to its future survival. The Garden’s plant Nursery will be open for plant sales from 9am to Noon and will offer a 50% discount on Crabwood, Coffee colubrina and Princewood trees. A ceremonial "Arbor Day" tree planting will take place at 1pm. Guided Docent tours will be offered at 10:30am and 1pm. Groups will be limited to 10 people and masks will be required.
