WOMENFEST SIZZLES WITH MUSIC AND COMEDY NOW THROUGH SEPT. 7

KEY WEST, Florida Keys — A hot entertainment lineup and a warm welcome await attendees at Key West’s Womenfest, a celebration for lesbians and their friends happening now through Sunday, Sept 7.

Headlining performers include the high-energy all-female band Sister Funk, hip-hop and soul artists God-des & She, dance sensation Lori Michaels and singer, songwriter and funny woman Lisa Koch.

Sister Funk and God-des & She are to share the stage at Sunset Rock, set for Friday, Sept. 5, at Dante’s at Conch Harbor Marina, 951 Caroline St. The outdoor event takes place overlooking the waters of Key West Bight — an ideal location to view Key West’s famed sunset.

The award-winning rockers of Sister Funk have earned comparisons to Pink and Maroon 5. The band also appeared at Womenfest in 2006, where they wowed attendees with their sizzling sound and exciting style.

Hip-hop and soul duo God-des & She gained widespread renown during a guest appearance on the Showtime television series “The L Word.” Their latest CD, titled “Stand Up,” recently hit the streets.

Gates for Sunset Rock are to open at 7 p.m., with Sister Funk set to perform at 7:30 p.m. and God-des & She to take the stage at 9:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $25 per person.

Comedienne Lisa Koch, who performs regularly on board Olivia Cruises, is slated to present Laughing Out Loud Saturday, Sept. 6, at Key West’s Tropic Cinema, 416 Eaton St. Two performances of her wickedly irreverent showcase are scheduled, with the curtain to go up at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m.

Tickets are priced at $25 per person for general admission and $35 per person for priority seating.

Special guest Lori Michaels is as skilled at performing soft love tunes as she is on her hot dance tracks. A Womenfest veteran who delighted audiences in 2006 and 2007, she is slated to make multiple appearances Sept. 4-6 including an “unplugged” happy hour performance Friday, Sept. 5, at Aqua Nightclub, 711 Duval St.

As well as music and comedy, the festival schedule includes on-the-water excursions ranging from women-only sunset sails to reef snorkeling and dolphin watching, trolley tours that spotlight the history and contributions of Key West’s flourishing LGBT community, late-night parties that showcase the island city’s electric nightclub scene, women-only daytime pool parties at local resorts, a street fair, two country evenings featuring dancing and sexy competitive “bull riding,” a Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Party and a group commitment ceremony and champagne brunch.

God-des & She are to present a final performance at Womenfest’s closing event, a “floating tea dance” aboard the catamaran Fury that also features DJ Harmony.

Dance sensation Lori Michaels is just as comfortable playing a keyboard while singing soft love tunes as rocking out the house with hot dance tracks.
