Runners to Chart a Scenic Course in Key West’s Southernmost Marathon

KEY WEST, Florida Keys — Entrants in the Southernmost Marathon, Half and 5k, dubbed the “SoMo,” can follow a 26.2-mile, 13.1-mile or 3.1-mile route while enjoying views of the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and scenic streets in the continental United States’ southernmost city. All three races are set for Saturday, Oct. 6.

The marathon begins at 5:30 a.m. Saturday and the half marathon at 5:45 a.m. Racers who want a shorter course can choose the 5k with a start time of 7:30 a.m.

The start and finish lines for all three “SoMo” challenges are at Lagerheads Beach Bar, 0 Simonton St. beside the Gulf of Mexico.

Racers in the marathon are to run a flat, fast course that includes parts of Key West’s historic Old Town, Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico shorelines, neighboring Stock Island, and a section of the Florida Keys Overseas Highway and the Lower Keys. Half-marathon contenders are to race through portions of Old Town, along Key West’s Atlantic and gulf shorelines and into Stock Island.

Runners in the 5k proceed along Old Town streets and into the Truman Waterfront Park before returning to Lagerheads.

Water and “fueling” stations are to be positioned at intervals on all courses.

Runners can pick up their packets at Lagerheads from noon to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, and check out the offerings at an associated on-site race expo.

Awards presentations are scheduled following each race. All participants are to receive an event T-shirt and finisher medal.

Registration is $140 per person for the full marathon, $110 for the half marathon and $40 for the 5k.
