Colorado Angler and Keys Captain Team to Win Del Brown Permit Tournament

LOWER FLORIDA KEYS, Fla. — Clint Packo of Littleton, Colorado, caught and released five permit to earn 750 points and the title of grand champion angler at the 2021 Del Brown Permit Tournament that ended July 21. The tournament honors the late angling legend Brown, who caught more than 500 permit during his lifetime.

Packo and his captain, Simon Becker of Cudjoe Key, Florida, tallied permit measuring 22.25 inches and 29.5 inches on the tournament’s first fishing day and a 26-inch fish on the second day, followed by 22-inch and 22.5-inch releases on the final day.

Nathaniel Linville of Key West released two permit and took second place with 300 points. Linville fished with Key West’s Captain John O’Hearn.

Wes Smith of Dallas, Texas, followed Linville in the standings. Fishing with Captain Nick LaBadie of Key West, he also caught and released two permit and earned 300 points, but ended the tournament in third place based on total inches of permit caught.

In the bonefish division, Jose Ucan of Punta Allen, Mexico, took top honors with 16 releases. He was guided by Captain Justin Rea of Sugarloaf Key, Florida.

Anglers on 22 boats fished the tournament named for the internationally acclaimed Brown, who is credited with popularizing fly-fishing for permit.
