Free Upper Keys Alternative Transportation to Expand Service in Early March

ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys — Islamorada is expanding the hours of its alternative transportation services with Freebee Islamorada, operating on-call electric vehicles to transport passengers among Islamorada’s four islands.

The Freebee Electric Vehicle Ridesharing Service has been running on Upper Matecumbe Key since November 2018. Current service is offered Thursdays and Fridays from 4 p.m. to midnight, Saturdays from noon to midnight and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Expanded hours are expected to begin March 4, 2020, to serve all of Islamorada six days per week. The service is to operate Tuesdays and Wednesdays 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Thursdays 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Fridays 11 a.m. to midnight, Saturdays from 12 p.m. to midnight and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Schedules are subject to change.

Two nine-passenger “Freebee XL” electric vans are to be added to a five-passenger “Freebee Mini” vehicle. The new larger electric vehicles, considered full-speed, can drive on the Florida Keys Overseas Highway (U.S. 1) as well as the area’s bridges, and will serve all of Upper Matecumbe, Lower Matecumbe, Windley and Plantation keys.

The “Freebee Mini,” whose maximum speed is 25 mph, is to serve Upper Matecumbe.
