Marathon Fishing: Deep Offshore, Bay Waters and Middle Keys Bridge Fishing

Find a Marathon fishing guide

Marathon's tarpon fishing is explosive, and one of the most action-filled ways a novice angler can catch a large fish.

Anglers continually marvel at the spectacular leaps, strong runs, and incredible endurance of the "silver king." The west end of the Seven Mile Bridge, and Bahia Honda bridge are the sites of the heaviest tarpon fishing action, as well as excellent fishing from the Long Key Bridge and both the bridges at Toms Harbor.

Offshore, troll for Gulfstream pelagics such as sailfish, dolphin fish, and wahoo. The Marathon West Hump rises from depths of 1,100 feet to a peak of 480 feet, an underwater platform that is a veritable dinner table for gamefish, like blue and white marlin, blackfin tuna, amberjack and sharks.

Fish the reefs and wrecks for yellowtail, mangrove, and mutton snapper, along with grouper, mackerel, and barracuda. With its beautiful coral reefs, Marathon also has numerous oceanside artificial reefs.

Marathon's gulfside is deeper and wide open, creating an entirely different style of bay fishing, but the perfect choice for family fun fishing if offshore waters are too rough. Natural ledges and artificial reefs of old lobster traps, drums and other wreckage are scattered throughout the bay anywhere from 5 to 15 miles north of Marathon.

Regardless of the style of fishing you prefer it's wise to hire the services of a local licensed guide who knows the area and understands the movements and feeding habits of your quarry. Marathon is also home to a number of large party boats, offering anglers an economical day of fishing.

Whatever style of fishing you choose, remember to be sensitive to the environment. Leave no trash in the water, be careful not to hook seabirds, don't leave wads of discarded fishing line for sea life to become entangled in.

Catch 'em 'till your arms ache, and have a great time!
