South Florida Symphony to Present 21st Season of Key West Concerts

KEY WEST, Florida Keys — Audiences can experience a classic American opera and four Masterworks Series concerts with stellar soloists during the South Florida Symphony’s 21st season of performances in Key West, where the orchestra was launched.

Guided by award-winning conductor and Key West native Sebrina María Alfonso, the symphony is a renowned professional orchestra that performs on the island and in other South Florida cities.

Its 21st season is to begin by pairing the symphony with internationally acclaimed violinist Angelo Xiang Yu for a unique evening of music. The Masterworks I concert is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at Glynn R. Archer’s Center for the Performing Arts at 2100 Flagler Ave. on the campus of Key West High School.

The concert program is to feature Ludvig van Beethoven’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra; Samuel Barber’s Essay No. 1, Opus 12; and Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.”

Soloist Yu is widely lauded for his flawless technique, tone and musical maturity. His professional credits include winning the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition, appearances with prestigious symphonies around North America, and international recital and chamber music performances from Paris to Singapore.

In January 2019, the symphony is to present George Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” with a cast of leading African-American vocalists including David Hughey, who made his Broadway debut in the Tony Award–winning revival of the Gershwin classic.

The production is to be staged at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Key West’s Tennessee Williams Theatre, located at 5901 College Road on the campus of Florida Keys Community College.

The 2018-19 Masterworks Series also includes concerts Wednesday, Feb. 20, featuring pianist Natasha Paremski; Sunday, March 10, with pianist Svetlana Smolina; and Saturday, April 13, spotlighting the talents of cellist Julian Schwarz.

All three offerings are set for 7:30 p.m. at the Tennessee Williams Theatre.
