WOMEN TACKLE FISHING SKILLS IN ISLAMORADA AT ‘LADIES, LET’S GO FISHING!’ SEMINAR

(l to r) Michelle Owen, Tallahassee, Fla., Kathryn Feanny, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Barbara Owen, Powder Springs, Ga., (Michelle Owen's mom), Karen Walters, Naples, Fla. and Pat Goudy, Naples, Fla. show off their Sunday catch.

After the catch, women learn how to fillet the fish themselves, then savor the flavor of their hard work.

Mother and daughter duos are popular during this annual seminar.

ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys — Women who dream of landing “the big one” but find knot tying, casting or any other angling skill a mystery are invited to register for the ninth annual “Ladies, Let’s Go Fishing!” Seminar, slated for Friday through Sunday, Nov. 13-15.

The women-centered angling adventure is to be held at Holiday Isle Beach Resorts and Marina, mile marker 84 oceanside in Islamorada. This award-winning fishing seminar series, hosted by Florida's Fish and Wildlife Commission, shares practical skills and provides a fun hands-on learning experience.

Billed as the “no-yelling school of fishing,” the seminar kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday with a welcome party for participants and guests. Saturday’s activities begin at 8 a.m. with class-style sessions at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.

Whatever the skill level, the seminar also focuses on the thrill level. Registrants can choose from morning classes geared toward fishing offshore, on the bottom, inshore or with a fly rod.

After lunch, the action starts with women gaffing grapefruits and casting bait nets like weighted canopies over clear shallow waters. Other hands-on fishing stations include conservation techniques, spin casting, knot tying, boat handling, trailer backing and reeling against pressure. The schedule concludes at 4:30 p.m.

Sunday morning the class heads to the waters off Islamorada, known as the Sportfishing Capital of the World, to fish. Anglers can choose fishing from a party (drift) boat, inshore flats fishing or trying their skills from a sportfishing boat. Before anglers savor their succulent catch they can learn how to fillet it themselves in the seminar’s final session.

Entry for the seminar, which includes lunch, a goody bag, class book and instruction, is $115 per person. After Oct. 14 the fee is $130, and it rises to $145 the week prior to class. Sunday fishing excursions require an additional fee ranging from $45 to $265 per person.

For more information, call (954) 475-9068, e-mail info@ladiesletsgofishing.com or visit ladiesletsgofishing.com. Reserve early, since classes sell out quickly.

To find out about area accommodations, call the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce at (305) 664-4503 or (800) 322-5397, or explore this Web site.
